Galapagos Islands Packing List   (former Galapagos visitor)

Last year when I got home from the Galapagos, I unpacked my bag and divided my stuff into two categories: the stuff I used and the stuff I did not use. About 30% of the weight was not needed at all. I have made this list to keep you from making the mistakes I did. This is a casual dress affair. Bring no fancy clothes at all. You will be wearing shorts and t-shirts almost all the time. You can wash things out and hang them in the sun for quick drying. Bring soft duffle bag type luggage that can be stuffed in a drawer when empty. You will have drawers and a place to hang clothes up. You will not be allowed to pick up shells, bones, or even a rock in the Galapagos.

Things to Bring:

Tevas (for wet landings, many went barefoot)
Old running shoes (for walking around on the islands). You will be asked to put these in a tub near the Panga loading area and you are not allowed to wear them on the boat)
Socks bring at least 7 pair for walking around on the boat
Shorts at least 3 pair
T-shirts or short sleeved shirts at least 3 of each.
Long pants or long skirt or beach wrap one is plenty, quick dry is best
One sweater, fleece jacket or sweatshirt for wearing on the top deck at night
Bathing suits bring two
Floppy hat with chinstrap many people get sunburned heads using only a visor

*******

Snorkeling face mask and snorkel essential, try it out before you go to make sure it does not leak.
Flippers that fit you the boat has some, but you are taking your chance that they don’t have your size
neopreme socks I was the only one who brought these, but they were really comfortable and you can wear them with flippers and tevas. The bottoms of the panga were much less slippery with these on. You can find them in the kayaking part of the sporting good store. shorty wet suit people diving will want the long sleeve and leg variety mesh bag to put your gear in that way your mask and underwater camera will not join the gigantic pile of stuff in the bottom of the Panga. I got one in the sporting goods store

An old towel or one of those travel super absorbent towels. The cabins have nice towels, but you are going to be wet a lot

Binoculars absolutely essential
Camera absolutely essential. I got the best shots from my little digital point and shoot. If you are a serious photographer bring along your SLR and a long lens. You will get fabulous close-ups with a 100 mm lens, and you will rarely need anything as big as a 200 mm lens. Bring polarizing filters. Have a heavy zip lock for each camera and lens.

Camcorder the smaller the better, not an essential but really fun
Tripod if you have a camcorder or long lens, you will need one. Bring the smallest lightest one you can find. A big heavy one is too hard to manage on the Panga.

Batteries and recharger, your cabins have 110 V outlets so you can recharge batteries on your camera and camcorder at night. The juice is intermittent, so plan on longer charging times. If you must bring throw away batteries, plan to take them back to the mainland when they are dead. The thought of a landfill in the Galapagos is chilling and you don’t want to add to it.

Film 1 ½ rolls per day unless you are also using a digital, then maybe 1 roll per day. Do not count on buying film in Quito or the Galapagos. Pack in your carryon. I use a lead lined bag in case they refuse to hand inspect the film.

Day pack smaller and lighter type, preferably old and beat up. It will get wet and salty
Dry Bag, essential. Get this in a sporting good store. You will put your camera and camcorder in here while you are riding in the Panga. It has to fit into your day pack *****

Sun bloc and aloe Vera sunburn lotion I didn’t use these, it was overcast a lot. Just in case it is bright sunshine every day

Light reading / light book
Spanish Phrase Book
Snacks,  Snacks the boat has snacks, but very limited in variety

Real coffee, small filter and mug for serious coffee drinkers. All that is available on the boat is instant. There is hot water available all the time to make your own coffee and tea.

Straps to keep your glasses from falling off
Sunglasses or clip-on

Seasick pills
Ear plugs for sleeping in case it is noisy. It was not noisy last year but you never know.

Galapagos Guide Book
Note pad. You want to write down where you are going each day.

Do Not Bring This Stuff
A spotting scope totally useless
A heavy tripod way too cumbersome
Water purifier
Thermos
Flip flops slippery and much less useful than Tevas
Street shoes you can get by with your Tevas and running shoes
Snorkeling goodie bag they won’t let you pick anything up anyway
Lava booties not needed, Tevas are better
Walking stick, unless you can’t manage without one. There is a fair amount of boulder hopping.
Hiking boots too big, too clunky and they will get wet with salt water. Not needed.
Fanny pack a little day pack is better
Underwater flashlight or a dry land flashlight nor a regular flashlight

Beer or hard liquor, unless there is something you can’t do without. The boat has a well-stocked bar and fixings for drinks. You sign up for what you drink and pay up at the end of the cruise.
